Veliko fizikalnih problemov se lahko formulira v kontekstu homotopskih grup. Še posebej uporabne so fundamentalne grupe, ki so zaradi svojih lepih matematičnih lastnosti uporabne pri razumevanju prostorov parametrov urejenosti ter tako orišejo fazne prehode, njihove aplikacije pa mnogokrat najdemo tudi v sistemih kondenziranih in trdnih snovi.
Many problems in physics can be formulated in the context of homotopy groups. Because of their clean mathematical properties, fundamental groups are especially helpful when it comes to understanding order parameter spaces and thus explaining phase transitions. We often find their applications in systems of condensed and solid matter.
